Look at the IBPS PO calendar for 2026: Prelims on 22 and 23 August, Mains on 4 October. Prelims tests English, Quant and Reasoning, with no General Awareness section (the same holds for SBI PO and both clerk exams), so for months GA becomes "after Prelims".
When DI sets and seating arrangements are eating your day, 30 minutes on RBI circulars feels like a luxury. Then the result comes out, Mains is weeks away, and you're working out how to remember current affairs for bank exams with six months of RBI updates, schemes, appointments and reports landing at once.
The Mains section is big, too. The 2026 IBPS PO notification raised it to 50 questions for 60 marks, from 35 for 50 in 2025. That's as many marks as Reasoning and three times what English carries.
Start with a GA slot small enough to run every day, the Prelims month included. Then sort banking awareness by how each kind of fact behaves, since a definition you learn once and a repo rate that can change at any MPC meeting need different handling. Before Mains, use the slot to test yourself instead of rereading, because crammed facts fade fast.
Six Mains exams in six months: the 2026 bank calendar
All dates are tentative and from the official notifications, except IBPS PO's exact days, reported from IBPS's calendar (the notification gives only months). Check ibps.in and SBI's careers page for changes.
| Exam (2026 cycle) | Prelims | Mains | Mains GA section |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI PO | August 2026 | September 2026 | 60 Q, 60 marks, 45 min |
| IBPS PO | 22–23 August 2026 | 4 October 2026 | 50 Q, 60 marks, 35 min |
| SBI Clerk | September 2026 | November 2026 | 50 Q, 50 marks, 35 min |
| IBPS Clerk | October 2026 | December 2026 | 40 Q, 50 marks, 20 min |
| IBPS RRB PO and Clerk | November to December 2026 | December 2026 to February 2027 | 40 Q, 40 marks, 15 min |
SBI Clerk Prelims falls in the month of SBI PO Mains, and IBPS Clerk Prelims in the month of IBPS PO Mains. Writing both PO and Clerk, you never reach a point where Prelims is "over", so a GA plan that waits for one starts in your busiest stretch.
Each Mains section has its own timer: IBPS Clerk's GA allows 30 seconds a question, the RRB exams about 22, and each wrong answer costs a quarter of the question's marks. With options built to be close, "I've seen this somewhere" won't pick 5.25% over 5.50% in the 22 seconds an RRB Mains question gives you.
RBI Grade B and RBI Assistant
RBI Grade B works the other way round. Going by recent notices, GA is in Phase I, so it starts on day one, and Phase II's Economic and Social Issues and Finance and Management papers need you to understand the concepts behind the news. RBI Assistant, per recent notices, has GA only in Mains. Confirm both on RBI's recruitment page.
What banking awareness covers, and how each part behaves in memory
The IBPS PO section name lists the spread: General, Economy, Banking, Digital and Financial Awareness, "including RBI circulars". Rates, base years and regulator heads move and get their own sheets below. The rest splits three ways.
Concepts that stay put
CRR, SLR, repo, SDF, MSF, Bank Rate, NPAs, Basel norms, types of banks, payment systems. Learn them once from a standard book (a headline like "RBI cut the CRR" only sticks if you know what CRR does), then test yourself on them every couple of weeks.
RBI updates, schemes and economy news
RBI directions, penalties on banks, committees, scheme changes, GDP releases and Budget announcements blur fastest. Take Mudra. Tarun Plus (₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh, only for borrowers who have taken and repaid a Tarun loan) joined Shishu, Kishore and Tarun from 24 October 2024, so older cards and books are out of date. Give each scheme the same slots (launch year, implementing body, target group, limits, latest change).
Tie economy news to a concept you already know, the way UPSC aspirants link a news item to a static topic. A GDP release needs two cards: who releases it (the National Statistics Office, under MoSPI) and its base year, now 2022-23. For IBPS PO Mains, add what each change means for a borrower, since its descriptive paper, per the 2026 notification, may draw on economic issues and banking trends.
The general half of GA
Mains GA also covers sports, awards, summits, international events, important days and appointments outside banking. Give each summit four slots (what, where, when, India's role) and each day its reason, so Navy Day (4 December) goes with Operation Trident on Karachi harbour, 1971. It's the same material SSC aspirants drill, so borrow their confusion sets for look-alike facts.
Why monthly PDFs make current affairs for bank exams hard to remember
Monthly compilations are organised by date, while the exam asks by concept. You need every liquidity tool together in your head, and the PDFs keep them in six places.
The same item shows different values in different months. In June 2025 RBI announced a CRR cut from 4% to 3%, in four 25-basis-point steps from September to November 2025, so depending on which compilation you open, CRR is 4% with a cut on the way, 3.75%, 3.50%, 3.25% or 3%.
And it all lands at once, in the weeks you're trying to fix your DI speed.
A triage for one month at a time
Take one month per sitting and send each fact where it belongs: changed rates and figures to the moving-numbers sheet, reports to the publisher table, scheme changes to that scheme's card, appointments to the moving-names sheet. What's left is general current affairs. Quiz yourself on it and revise only what you miss. What you shouldn't do is open a fresh 300-page six-month compilation and start at page one.
A moving-numbers sheet for RBI rates and base years
Marks go when the number in your notes is two policy meetings old. Keep one page listing each changing value, when it last changed and when you last checked it. When a value changes, strike the old one through instead of erasing it; sometimes the direction of change is the question. Values below are as of 22 September 2026, from the Current Rates panel on RBI's website and PIB releases.
| Item | Value (22 Sept 2026) | Last changed |
|---|---|---|
| Repo rate | December 2025 MPC | |
| SDF rate (floor) | 5.00% | Moves with repo (minus 25 bps) |
| MSF rate (ceiling) and Bank Rate | 5.50% | Moves with repo (plus 25 bps) |
| CRR | Four steps, Sept to Nov 2025 | |
| SLR | 18.00% | Unchanged for years |
| GDP base year | New series, 27 Feb 2026 | |
| CPI base | New series, 12 Feb 2026 |
The Monetary Policy Committee has six members: three from RBI including the Governor, who chairs it with a casting vote, and three external members appointed by the central government. Its inflation target is 4%, give or take 2%, until 31 March 2031. RBI publishes its MPC dates in advance, so you know when the sheet will need work; update it, projections included, the evening a decision comes out. Once a week, cover the value column and fill it in from memory.
Regulator heads and headquarters
On the moving-names sheet, learn the headquarters once, since they don't move. For heads, strike through each outgoing name and write the date the new one took charge.
| Institution | Headquarters | Head (checked Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| RBI | Mumbai | |
| SEBI | Mumbai |
Add IRDAI (Hyderabad), PFRDA (New Delhi), NABARD (Mumbai) and SIDBI (Lucknow), with each current head checked on the body's own website and dated, plus bank MD and CEO appointments, grouped by bank. Reading each crossed-out name with its replacement as a pair makes last year's appointee less likely to push out this year's (proactive interference).
Financial terms as trap cards
Write each term's meaning and what it gets confused with, plus the Hindi term if you'll answer in Hindi. Say the answer before you look.
- Repo vs Bank Rate. Repo: RBI lends to banks against eligible securities. Bank Rate: RBI buys or rediscounts bills of exchange and commercial papers; now aligned with MSF.
- CRR vs SLR. Both are shares of NDTL. CRR is kept as a balance with RBI; SLR is held by the bank itself in government securities, cash or gold.
- Reverse repo vs SDF. Both absorb liquidity, but RBI gives collateral under reverse repo and none under SDF, which replaced the fixed-rate reverse repo as the corridor floor on 8 April 2022.
- NEFT and RTGS vs UPI and IMPS. RBI owns and operates NEFT and RTGS (RTGS minimum ₹2 lakh); NPCI runs UPI, IMPS, RuPay, NACH, NETC FASTag and AePS.
- NPA. For a term loan, interest or instalment overdue for more than 90 days (farm loans follow crop-season rules instead). Expect nearby numbers in the options.
- Payments bank vs small finance bank. A payments bank takes only demand deposits (up to ₹2 lakh per customer) and can't lend; a small finance bank takes deposits and lends, mainly to small borrowers.
Add "what happens if" cards too. If RBI raises CRR, what happens to liquidity? If repo is cut by 25 bps, where do SDF and MSF go? Answer aloud before checking (that's active recall), and add a card whenever a mock question catches you out.
Report and index publishers
Many report questions come down to "who publishes this?", and several names are near-identical, so learn them in pairs.
| Report / index | Published by |
|---|---|
| Financial Stability Report | RBI, June and December |
| Global Financial Stability Report | IMF |
| World Economic Outlook | IMF |
| Human Development Report | UNDP |
| Global Gender Gap Report | World Economic Forum |
| World Investment Report | UNCTAD |
| Global Hunger Index | Concern Worldwide, Welthungerhilfe and IFHV |
| Business Ready (B-READY) | World Bank |
Put the first two rows on one card. The Global Hunger Index has three publishers now, and notes from a few years ago may list only two. B-READY replaced Doing Business, which the World Bank discontinued in 2021, so strike Doing Business out of old notes and write B-READY beside it.
Fitting GA around Quant, Reasoning and English
Quant and Reasoning get your best hours for most of a season, since Prelims cut-offs decide whether you see Mains at all. GA only needs about half an hour a day when no Mains is within four months (the day's current affairs with a short quiz, one static concept, a few trap cards), 10 to 15 minutes of recall in the weeks around any Prelims, and 60 to 90 minutes from a Prelims result to that Mains.
The Prelims-weeks slot is the tempting one to drop, and in the 2026 cycle those weeks run from August into December. On those days, test one sheet from memory and take one short quiz.
A weekday for a working aspirant
Say you work 9:30 to 6. Quant goes before work, while your head is fresh: 45 minutes, or one DI set. GA recall happens on the commute, about 15 minutes on your phone: yesterday's facts from memory, then a short quiz. At lunch, read one economy article from the Hindu or the Indian Express as English comprehension practice, marking two words you'd miss in a cloze test. Evenings are Reasoning puzzles and one timed sectional. Sunday is a full mock, then the GA miss log.
In the Prelims weeks, when GA shrinks to that commute, the quiz doesn't have to be one you built. The RetainIt app for Android is free, with no ads or subscription. It sums up each day's current affairs with key points and exam facts, and its Custom Practice lets you pick a topic, a date range and a timer: after a Prelims result, set it to Economy, the last 30 days, timed. Misses resurface in later quizzes until you answer them right, Weak Areas shows whether Economy really is your weakest topic, and the Monthly Recap covers any month Prelims ate.
RetainIt won't teach banking concepts (keep the book), keep your sheets or tell you when one is due for re-testing. Its summaries don't link to RBI's own releases, so take every figure from rbi.org.in. The economy and banking summaries are also free in a browser, and questions worth asking any current affairs app have their own page.
Sorting GA mock misses into five buckets
After each full mock, tag every wrong or guessed GA question with one of five labels. A static banking miss (CRR, NPA, payments banks) sends you to the trap cards and the book. An unfamiliar RBI update means your triage is missing things; read RBI's press releases weekly. A moving number means the sheet is stale or untested. General current affairs (sports, awards, summits, days) needs quiz-mode passes. A report or index miss goes back to the publisher table. After three mocks, one or two buckets usually hold most of the misses, and the fullest one tells you which sheet or table to rebuild first.
The last three weeks before Mains
If the daily slot survived, these weeks are revision. Start with your bucket log, fullest bucket first, and test both sheets daily. Then revise the last four to six months of current affairs, newest first, followed by publisher pairs, trap cards and scheme cards. End each day with a mock GA section under the real sectional time.
For a second Mains a month later, triage the new month and re-test both sheets, since the rest carries over.
Practise on today's current affairs
Read each day's summaries free in English or Hindi, no sign-up needed. The RetainIt app adds daily MCQs with explanations, brings back the questions you miss, and shows your weakest topics. Free on Android, no ads.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a GA section in IBPS PO or SBI PO Prelims?
No, as per the 2026 notifications. Prelims for IBPS PO, SBI PO and both clerk exams has English, Quant (Numerical Ability for clerks) and Reasoning; IBPS RRB Prelims has only Reasoning and Quant. RBI Grade B, going by recent notices, is the exception, with GA in Phase I.
How many months of current affairs matter for IBPS PO Mains?
The usual advice is the last four to six months in detail, with a lighter pass before that, counted back from each Mains date; no notification fixes a period. For moving numbers, you need the current value and its last change, however old.
Are banking awareness and financial awareness the same?
They overlap heavily. Banking awareness is the core (RBI, monetary policy, terms, payment systems, regulators); financial awareness adds markets, insurance, pensions, the Budget and schemes. The clerk exams call their section "General/ Financial Awareness" and SBI PO calls it "General Awareness / Economy/ Banking Knowledge", but prepare them as one pool.
Where should I read RBI updates for bank exams?
On rbi.org.in: the press releases, the monetary policy statement after each MPC meeting, and the Current Rates panel on the home page. PIB covers schemes and economy data. A daily summary is fine for convenience, but copy figures onto your sheet from RBI itself.
How do I prepare GA in the few weeks between Prelims and Mains?
Triage one month of news per sitting, sending rates, reports, scheme changes and appointments to their sheets and cards. Then quiz yourself on what's left, newest month first, and test both sheets daily. In the final week, take a timed GA section each day and revise only its misses.
